Born in Abadan, Iran, Abasi (aka DJ Abasi) has traveled and lived all over the world, but came to call Vancouver his home in 1988. He was surrounded by music and dancing since birth, with his father a being music teacher who can play almost any instrument and an avid fan of all flavours of music from Western Pop, Disco, and Country to Persian Folk and World music.
Upon the discovery of the “.mod” music scene of the early 90s, he became seriously interested in dance and electronica in 1991 and started creating sampling and remixing tracks and building a CD collection, used to make mix tapes for friends. Inspired by such local DJs such as David Hawkes and Czech, and the club scene of the early 90s, he aspired to be a club DJ, hence he kept building his CD collection.
In 1995, unable to find his favourite track of the time, Mighty Dub Kats: Magic Carpet Ride, which had just been released as a 12” white label, he caved in and bought his first "Electronica" vinyl and the rest was history. Today, his record collection has grown beyond control, and includes a healthy mix of all genres of music.
DJ Abasi owns/spins many different styles of music, but he currently specializes in electro*, underground/deep/funky/vocal/glitch/disco house, techno (classic, Detroit, minimal, acid), progressive house, and mash-up/eclectic.
Abasi and the Intimate crew have created many legendary parties and club nights around town since 2000. He has helped organize and DJ at the legendary Lotus Long Weekend series of 3-room/club parties, where he has pushed the electro* as well as the mash-up sounds in Vancouver since 2003. SiGNAL Saturdays is also home to Abasi and his Intimate crew, whey they have been challenging the boundaries of Electronic Dance Music every Saturday since 2006.
